Clutch Clutch, a Maryland hard rock workhorse that emerged in the early 1990s, blended elements of funk and metal influenced by Faith No More and Led Zeppelin. Starting in the late ’90s with Clutch and The Elephant Riders and continuing into the 2000s, they’ve developed a dedicated fan base via continuous touring and successful alt-rock crossover albums. By the 2010s, the experienced foursome had ascended to new heights, charting in the Top 15 on the Billboard 200 with Earth Rocker in 2013 and Psychic Warfare in 2015.

Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes & Undeniable Truths Neil Fallon (vocals), Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass), and Jean-Paul Gaster formed the band in Germantown, Maryland, in 1991. (drums). Clutch got signed by EastWest Records after just one 7″ record (the legendary Earache release “Passive Restraints”), and they developed a local following via continuous gigging. In 1993, they released their first album, Transnational Speedway League.

Clutch gained widespread recognition two years later with the release of their self-titled album. With Elephant Riders, released in 1998 on the bigger Columbia label, many believed the band would join its musical cousins Korn and Deftones in the alternative metal winner’s circle. That didn’t turn out to be the case.

It didn’t matter, however, since Clutch’s fan following grew in strength. Pure Rock Fury was released in 2001, and Blast Tyrant followed three years later as their debut release for DRT Records. Robot Hive/Exodus, their eighth full-length, was released in 2005 and included the band’s first lineup change since the early 1990s, with the inclusion of keyboardist Mick Schauer.

Jam Room Clutch’s many side projects included a groove-based album (Jam Room, 2000), Live at the Googolplex, and the rarities record Slow Hole to China, all of which were released in 2003. Pitchfork & Lost Needles, released in 2005, combines Clutch’s 1991 Pitchfork 7″ with unpublished demos and early songs. The band went into the studio in the autumn of 2006 with producer Joe Barresi (Kyuss, Melvins) to record their second album, From Beale Street to Oblivion, which was released in March 2007.

Clutch published Full Fathom Five: Audio Field Recordings 2007-2008 on their own label, Weathermaker Music, in 2008. It was a CD/DVD collection of live recordings from concerts in New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Sydney. Strange Cousins from the West followed in 2009, and Earth Rocker, the band’s ninth album, was released in 2013.

Clutch maintained their continuous touring until late 2015, when they released their 11th album, Psychic Warfare, buoyed by the success of that album (their highest-charting release ever) and namesake lead song. The album topped the rock/hard rock charts and finished just outside the Billboard 200’s Top Ten, giving it their highest-charting effort to date.

They followed up the record with a lengthy tour that lasted into 2018, when the follow-up album Book of Bad Decisions was published. The album, like its two predecessors, was a Billboard Top 20 success, with songs including “Gimme the Keys” and “In Walks Barbarella.”

The band released a continuous stream of one-off songs under the title of the “Weathermaker Vault Series” as the decade came to a conclusion. They released the Weathermaker Vault Series, Vol. 1 collection in late 2024, which included rarities like “Run John Barleycorn Run” from a 2014 split record with Lionize and a version of Pappo’s Blues’ “Algo Ha Cambiado.”

Clutch is a band from Maryland, USA. They have released seven studio albums and one live album. The clutch discography has been released in two formats: CD and Vinyl.
